Denver's shelter system has changed dramatically in the last three years. Hotels converted to shelters, micro-communities built, coordinated entry launched, Housing Central Command stood up. If you haven't been through the system recently, understanding how it works can save you days of confusion.
Two Tracks: Emergency vs. Housing Pipeline
Track one is emergency shelter โ getting you off the street tonight. Track two is the housing pipeline โ case management, vouchers, and permanent housing. The ideal path moves you from the first into the second.

Non-Congregate Shelters: The New Model
Under Mayor Johnston's AIMHigh initiative, Denver converted hotels and built facilities where residents get individual rooms with doors โ not rows of cots. Residents can bring pets and possessions, access on-site case management, and connect to the housing pipeline. Access is typically through outreach teams or coordinated entry, not walk-up.
Micro-Communities
Small clusters of tiny homes providing more stable interim housing than traditional shelters, with on-site services. Accessed through coordinated entry and outreach teams, not self-referral.
Coordinated Entry: OneHome / MDHI
Denver's gateway to longer-term housing assistance:
- Assessment: Vulnerability assessment measuring needs, health, length of homelessness
- Matching: Based on your score, matched to rapid re-housing, permanent supportive housing, or vouchers
- Referral: When a spot opens, you're referred to a housing program
- Housing: The program helps you find and move into permanent housing
How to Access
Call 2-1-1 and ask for housing assistance or coordinated entry
Visit: mdhi.org/need-help
Many shelters and day centers can also do the assessment.
Reality Check
Getting into coordinated entry doesn't mean immediate housing. Waitlists can be months to over a year. The system prioritizes highest vulnerability scores. Stay connected with your case manager and keep contact info current.
Types of Housing Programs
- Rapid Re-Housing: Time-limited rental assistance (3โ12 months) plus case management
- Permanent Supportive Housing: Long-term subsidized housing with ongoing support. You pay 30% of income.
- Housing Vouchers: Rental subsidies for the private market
What to Do Right Now
